"Ginger Snaps" review

Ginger Snaps (2000)

Directed by John Fawcett
Writing credits Karen Walton John Fawcett

Emily Perkins .... Brigitte 'B' Fitzgerald
Katharine Isabelle .... Ginger Fitzgerald
Kris Lemche .... Sam
Mimi Rogers .... Pamela Fitzgerald
Jesse Moss .... Jason McCardy

Two teenage sisters are attacked by a werewolf. One gets bit and starts to change. You know, female stuff. She starts dressing sexier. She starts menstruating. She grows a tail. The animal in her is unleashed.

First, let me say two good things about the flick. Ginger, (Katharine Isabelle), is hot. When the werewolf juices started flowing, her wardrobe changed from frumpy to mega babe. The werewolf makeup was good too. The scenes where there was a werewolf on screen were fun.

Unfortunately, I didn't like this movie. Clearly, "Ginger Snaps" was not interested in werewolf horror. Although they did have a cool looking werewolf, it really was a story of female teen angst. Ginger was going through the usual high school drama until a werewolf came along. Then she is bit and becomes an animal, both sexually and literally. When werewolves are having their period, I know something is wrong.

So while it is a well acted flick of teen angst, it's not the werewolf movie I want to see. I go for horror with my werewolf, not beasts with tampons.

SCORE: 2 out of 4 menstruating werewolves

dr. gore, i completely agree, this is a very over-rated film, however, did you know that on november 10 1999 right in the middle of the six week shooting schedule of this movie katherine isabelle celebrated her 18th birthday, can you just imagine being there on the set knowing that, and being around her at the absolute pinnacle of her physical attractiveness and desirability, and then somehow managing to bugger her on that very day, that would have been the ultimate experience of a lifetime.

Agreed. That would be a great day. Ginger was ready to snap. Perhaps that's what gives the movie it's power. Isabelle's raging body is too much to contain. Just wish there were a few more horror scenes to compliment Ms. Isabelle's babe transformation.
